Edward Thomas Suffern, Jr., age 64, a native of Metairie, LA and a resident of Mandeville, LA passed away on Sunday, May 14 th , 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward T. Suffern, Sr. and Gladys Brennan Suffern; brother, Stuart Suffern, sister, Anne Suffern Bernard; and grandnephew, Timothy “Tripp” Verret Burns, III. Edward is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia Hand Suffern; daughter Megan Suffern Roy (Darren), son Edward “Trey” Suffern, III (Adrianna); grandchildren Luke and Adam Roy; siblings, Patrick Suffern (Monique), Laura Burns (Timothy), James Suffern (Kathryn), Meehan Murphy (Michael), and
Matthew Suffern (Theresa). He is survived by sister-in-law Diana Suffern.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Teresa Hand, father-in-law, James Hand; brother-in-law, Ronald Hoefeld, brother-in-law, Ronald Hand, brother-in-law, Thomas Hand; nephews-in-law, Timothy Hand, Michael Hand, and Thomas Hand, Jr.
He is survived by his extended Hand family – Teresa Hoefeld, James Hand (Lynne), Mary Jo Hand, Terrence Hand (Ursula), Mary Hand, and Melissa Gleason. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is survived by his dear friend, Sheri Stewart and his Dwyer, Cambre, & Suffern family.
Ed completed his undergraduate studies in 1981 at Loyola University obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration. Ed continued his studies through 1984 obtaining his Juris Doctor at Loyola University where he served on the Loyola Law
Review and authored “Securities Fraud: A Supreme Court Prospectus of the 10(b) Action”. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma; Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Alpha Delta.
Ed practiced law as a partner in the law firm Dwyer, Cambre, & Suffern. His practice primarily included real estate law, affordable housing development, zoning and land use matters, governmental relations, commercial finance, and business transactions. He was a member of the New Orleans Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Louisiana Chapter of American Planning Association, and Louisiana Association of Affordable Housing Providers. Ed was a member of the Serra Club of East Jefferson.
Ed had one of the strongest work ethics. He always wanted to be a role model for the younger lawyers. He always put his family first and took his role as oldest sibling of eight very seriously. His favorite role of all was being “Paw Paw”.
He was a loving husband and father. He will be missed beyond words by all who loved him. He was truly a good man. He always made sure everyone was taken care of.
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 20 th , 2023 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 West Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM in the church. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Abbey cemetery.
