Darrell Turner entered the light of God’s face and joined the Angels and Saints after a hard-fought battle of COVID-19 on January 5th, 2021 at 5:50 am. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery in St. Covington, LA. Darrell was born to Inez Turner- Melancon and raised by the grace of a father James Melancon. Reared in the Magnolia Housing projects Darrell was active in sports at an early age. He attended Tommy Lafon Elementary School for secondary education. Carter G. Woodson Middle School, and Walter L. Cohen High School, where he graduated as a proud Green Hornet. Darrell also known as Kaboobie or Kucca had to work at a young age to help the family survive. He along with his older sister Claudette are responsible for saving the family from near homelessness. Before marriage Darrell worked with the Neville Brothers, an apprentice at Nolan Marshall Photography Studio, and a messenger and one of the first African Americans to work for First National Bank. He is a proud alumnus of Southern University of New Orleans. He held the potential to be a leader in society. Darrell met Paula Herbert-Turner and son Alvin Herbert they later shared a child together, lil Darrell and was married August of 1983. A few years later, after being poisoned, Darrell begin to slip away into someone unrecognizable to the people that he loved and himself. He was institutionalized by the state of Louisiana and for 27 years has spent it in forensic facilities, away from his loved ones, with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Despite his mental illness he remained a man of character and honor and over the years family have enjoyed visits with him and staff always enjoyed his character. He worked for many years on the grounds of the facilities that housed him. His son Darrell fought tirelessly for his father's freedom and to better his conditions. Darrell touched so many people in his life before and after his illness and we are all thankful to have him. Ultimately the Judicial and Medical systems failed him. On January 5th, 2021 at 5:50 a.m. Darrell entered the light of God’s face and joined the Angels and Saints after a hard-fought battle of COVID-19. Darrell leaves to cherish his son, Darrell Christopher Herbert (Aquetta), his wife Paula Turner, grandchildren, Ashle, Ebone, and Micah Herbert. 3 great grandchildren Kendrick, Triniti, and Harmonee, 6 siblings Lanard Turner (Brunetta), James Jones (Paulette), Carol, Michael (Javetta), Alyson, and Baldwin Melancon. One Goddaughter Deion, and a host of cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Inez Turner-Melancon, Step-Father James Melancon, Sisters Gilda Turner and Claudette Canty, brother James Melancon and son Alvin Scott Herbert.
