CLAYTON GUITTERREZ OBITUARY
Clayton John "CJ" Guitterrez, survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carmel Villars Guitterrez, passed away with his family at his side on the evening of January 10, 2023. Clayton was predeceased by his parents, Oreid Marie Bergeron Guitterrez and Herman Thompson Guitterrez, his sister, Felicia Guitterrez and brother, David Guitterrez. CJ is also survived by his sons, Kevin (Amy) and Steven (Monique), grandchildren Emma, Ava, Mariska, Mirella, Carter, Caroline, and Cameron Guitterrez. CJ was a retired deacon of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and his ministries included CYO and he served the parishes of St. Christopher the Martyr in Metairie, Our Lady of Good Counsel in New Orleans, St. John the Baptist in Folsom, and Most Holy Trinity in Covington. He was also a religion teacher at St. Francis Xavier, St. Charles Catholic, Archbishop Rummel, and St. Paul's High School, where he enjoyed challenging and teaching his students. CJ also proudly served his country as an active member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. During retirement CJ enjoyed serving as a mentor at Cafe' Reconcile and he shared his vast knowledge of plants and cultivation as volunteer tour guide at the New Orleans Botanical Gardens. The Guitterrez family would like to give special thanks to Heart of Hospice and to caregivers Charles Barbier and Gorgiana Johnson for their compassionate care as we spent our final days with him. An invitation is extended to all who knew CJ to join his family at the Basilica of St. Stephen, 1025 Napoleon Ave., New Orleans, on Monday, January 16 where visitation will take place from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a Funeral Mass at noon. In lieu of flowers, masses or a contribution to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
