JOANNE ELFER OBITUARY
Joanne Palestina Elfer, age 73, of Covington, Louisiana, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.
Joanne was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 4, 1948. She is a proud graduate of Mt. Carmel Academy, Class of 1966 and continued her education at Tulane University and earned a bachelor s degree in Education and master s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Loyola University.
Joanne was married to Ernest Elfer, Jr. on November 9, 1974; they were married 47 years.
Joanne was a lifelong educator and guidance counselor, teaching and counseling at elementary, middle, and high schools on both the East Bank and West Bank of Jefferson Parish, retiring from the Jefferson Parish School System in 2011. With over 30 years of service in the field of education and counseling, Joanne made a lasting impact on hundreds of students over the years, never forgetting a name or face and keeping in contact with as many former students as possible. Joanne enjoyed reading, cross stitching, knitting, event planning for family and friends, and connecting with the members of her Mt. Carmel Class of 66 at their regular luncheons and reunions. Joanne was a devout Catholic and was regularly involved with her church parishes throughout her life.
Joanne lived by the motto Enjoying life to the fullest and recognizing each day as a blessing.
Joanne is survived by her husband, Ernie; children, Rosey, Trey (Angelle Elfer), and Joseph (Jeanne Rougelot); and grandchildren, Aline Elfer and Louisa Elfer. She was the loving Grandme and great-aunt to Jaylynn Prudhomme, Nathan Prudhomme, and Dennis Prudhomme III and is survived by several adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and close friends.
Joanne is preceded in death by her father, Frank J. Palestina; mother, Anna Mae Lund Palestina; and son-in-law, Kevin Nero.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, September 3, 2022 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Queen of Peace Church located at 1501 W Causeway Approach in Mandeville, LA 70471. A Memorial Mass, with Fr. John Tran officiating, will begin at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children s Research Hospital in Joanne s name.
