CARLOTA MENDEZ OBITUARY
Carlota "Itsie" Mendez, 90, passed from this earth on July 4, 2022, a fitting day for lifelong social studies educator, matriarch, and proud American. Surrounded by loved ones–her sisters, nieces, and Maddie, her Havanese dog– she fell asleep for the last time at Lakeview Medical Center. Itsie was the eldest daughter of the late Alfonso and Carlota M Mendez of Metairie. After finishing high school at her beloved Dominican, she attained her education degree from St. Mary's Dominican College of New Orleans and her computer science degree from Delgado Community College. Carlota taught social studies and computer science for 57 years at Dominican, her alma mater (Class of 1950), T. H. Harris Junior High, Holy Name of Jesus, and other places. She was known for her quick wit and her stern look, when necessary. Although demanding in the classroom, she maintained lifelong relationships with many of her former students and colleagues. She is survived by her sisters- Susie Schroder, Lana and Willis May, and Melissa Mendez. She will be missed by them and her nieces and nephews: Melissa May and Russ, Cathy and Phil Williams, John and Ellie Schoder, Debbie and Rob Robertson, Stephen and Marie Schroder, and Suzanne and Byron Muench as well as her sixteen grand and 11 great grand nieces and nephews. Pallbearers include Phillip Williams, John Schroder, Rob Robinson, Steven Schroder, Byron Muench, Russ Poitras, and Willis May. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA 70457 or to the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia, 801 Dominican Drive, Nashville, TN 37228.
