Charles was born in New Orleans and grew up in Mid-City. He attended St Louis Cathedral Grammar School and Samuel J Peters High School. A reservist in the U.S. Marine Corps, Charles was drafted to serve in the Korean War. He survived the brutal Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and risked his life to rescue an injured soldier. He developed frostbite as a result of his bravery and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Following a courtship sustained through his service, Charles married Evelyn Catherine Meyers on his safe return in January 1951. They moved to Chalmette, LA to set up home and raise their 7 children, where the whole family was involved in church and school life at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Parish.

Blessed with charm and an outgoing personality, Charles became a Sales Representative and travelled throughout the South. During his near 50-year career, many of his clients became long-life friends. He retired in the late 90s and devoted himself to supporting the armed forces and his beloved Marine Corps. Charles formed a local chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association. He volunteered in local schools to talk about his military experience and was active in veterans events across the Greater New Orleans area. Charles was also instrumental in the planning and fundraising for a veterans memorial in St Bernard Parish.

Charles and Evelyn moved to Abita Springs, LA after Hurricane Katrina. He will be remembered and missed dearly for his humor, devotion to his wife and family, pride for having served his country as a U.S. Marine and educating people about the Korean War. Semper Fidelis.
