Obituary
Richard J. Smith Sr., age 91, passed away on Wednesday, February 5th. He was born on December 19, 1933 in Lille, France. He came with his family to New Orleans when he was 2 years old, where he lived until he retired to Covington, Louisiana. He is survived by his three sons, Richard Jr (Molly), Christian (Kelly), Stephen (Rachel), and his daughter Judy Smith Gaiennie (Dan); 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Valerie Cunningham Smith; parents, Gaston and Simone Smith; siblings, Elizabeth and Gaston Smith Jr.
He graduated from Jesuit High school and Loyola University. Richard served his country in the army for over 30 yrs and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He worked in the insurance field and retired from Canal Barge, a job he absolutely loved. He was a member of St. Benilde Catholic Church for many years, where he led the choir and was known for his solos of Oh Holy Night and Ave Maria. His beautiful voice was heard at the many weddings where he sang for family and friends. Richard was an avid Tulane fan, enjoyed playing his baby grand piano and tennis. Richard was a man of faith who loved God, his family, and his country. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Heritage Manor for their care of our father.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W Causeway Approach on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 12:00 Noon with Visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at St Joseph's Abbey Cemetery
