Obituary

Reverend Otis Wingo Young, a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, died on November 28, 2022. He was 71 years of age. Father Young was born on July 9, 1951 in Houston, TX, to Otis W. Young and Rita C. Simons. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Elfer and Dorothy Watson. Fr. Young is survived by his nephews, Jason Watson and Stephen Elfer, and his niece, Katherine Elfer. He attended elementary school at Columbia Elementary and Columbia Junior High in Columbia, Mississippi. His secondary education was at Columbia High School in Columbia, MS. He attended Tulane University, Mississippi State, the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned a B.S. in Accounting, and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. Fr. Young was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of New Orleans on June 2, 2001. He served as Parochial Vicar at St. Matthew the Apostle Church in River Ridge and St. Louis King of France Church in Metairie. He was parochial administrator at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse, and his pastorates were at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse, St. Joseph the Worker Church in Marrero and St. Peter Church in Covington until his retirement. In addition to these pastoral assignments, Fr. Young served on the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and the Priestly Life and Ministry Committee. Fr. Young was residing at St. Anthony’s Gardens in Covington at the time of his death.

Visitation will take place at St. Peter Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, on Monday, December 5, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place in the priest tomb at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery, St. Benedict.
