U.S. Veteran
Salvador Frank Diecidue (also know as Sal Dash) 91, a native of New Orleans and a resident of Slidell for over forty years, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021, in Slidell, Louisiana.
Sal was born a Sunday, July 14,1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Salvador Anthony Diecidue and Nunzia Famiglio Diecidue. He was preceded in death by his son, Salvador Frank Diecidue Jr., his daughter, Peggie Diecidue Saba, wife Carolyn Carlos Diecidue.
He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Bonnie Nolan Diecidue, daughter Christy Martiny; former wife Rose Mary Cruso Diecidue Caminita, and their 3 surviving children Pennie Carr (Earl), Sallie Diecidue, Steven Diecidue (Giselle); fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Born to an immigrant father and 1st generation mother, Sal assisted his father in starting Dash Lumber Company which is still in business today. For 36 years he was in the Naval Reserve, the Seabees Division, retiring as Chief Petty Officer.
Also he renovated and managed Pete Fountain’s French Quarter Inn. His love of New Orleans architecture, especially the French Quarter and Garden District, led him to open his own company “Progressive Iron Works” in 1948 at the age of 18. In his long and successful 73 year career, he worked on every street in the French Quarter creating, designing and restoring beautiful wrought iron for balconies, fences & garden gates.
Some of the best memories were created in the kitchen and around the dining table with his children. In 2016, he published a cook book “Italian Cooking New Orleans Style”.
Sal was a charter member and officer in Pete Fountain’s Half Fast Marching Club. He was a member of the Slidell Chapter of Sons of Italy and Mary’s Helpers in Marero, Louisiana and he also built their chapel. Moreover, he was commissioned to design and build the wrought iron crown above the head of the Blessed Mother in Medjugorje.
In addition to the love that he had for his children, his current soul mate is his wife of 13 years, Bonnie. His children are grateful for her love and devotation in his final years.
The family would like to express a special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Marc Bernstein and Associates, especially Leslie. Also to the staff of Our Lady of the Lake Surgical Center for their kindness and understanding, especially Heather Williams.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to North Shore Food Bank, 125 W. 30th Street, Covington, LA 70433. At the request of St. Joseph’s Abbey, this is a private funeral for family only.
