Obituary

Dr. David R. Powers, age 77, of Covington, LA, passed away peacefully on February 5th, 2025, surrounded by his family at his home, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer.

David Raymond Powers was born on August 30th, 1947 in Bakersfield, California. He was the youngest child of William and Evelyn Powers. David is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Patricia; his four children, Kristin (Brian) Peterson of Covington, Allison (Scott) Cheatwood of Monroe, Matthew Powers of Madison, WI, and Tori Powers of Covington; six grandchildren, Hanley Cheatwood, Tanner Peterson, Gavin Smith, Lelia Cheatwood, Kylie Peterson, and Marybel Cheatwood; three siblings, Brenda Barnes, Phyllis Penland, and Will Powers, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

David was raised in a small and loving home. He would say they didn't have a lot of money, but his parents made sure they never longed for anything. He was a classic All-American boy, playing both basketball and baseball and excelling in any kind of sports he played. He got into a lot of mischief, and his mother would often say he was either going to become the President of the United States, or end up in jail. After graduating high-school, he got married to his first wife, Linda, and soon had his first child, Kristin. He went to Fullerton Community College and then transferred to University of California, Irvine. He graduated from Irvine and continued there for medical school. By this point, he and Linda were divorced and he met the love of his life, Patricia, on the first day of medical school.

Together, they graduated from school and worked through their internship and residency years. He declared a specialty in Nephrology while Pat specialized as an OB/GYN oncologist. They got married in 1979, and had their first child in 1980, Allison. In 1985, they welcomed their son, Matthew, and in 1991, they had their youngest child, Tori.

In 1994, David and Pat decided to move their family from California to Louisiana to work for LSU Medical Center. They purchased 50 acres on the Northshore in Covington, where their family still resides. In 2000, David went into private practice by opening up Kidney and Hypertension, Associates. He continued working as a beloved nephrologist around the Northshore area until his death.

He was well known as the life of any party, often showing off his dance moves even when no one else was dancing. On the weekends, you would find him smoking a cigar and driving his tractor, or spending time in the pool with his grandkids. He could relate any life event to a Seinfeld episode, which annoyed Patricia to no end. David’s favorite holiday was Christmas - he would take extra care to pick the perfect tree and always go overboard with decorations. David and Pat hosted many Christmas parties, which are still a treasured memory for many. He loved his family more than words can describe, and he will be fiercely missed.

A celebration of Dr. Powers' life will be held on Saturday, February 15th at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 20370 Smith Rd, Covington, LA 70435. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and services will be at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph's Abbey Cemetery, 75376 River Road, Saint Benedict, LA 70457.
