Obituary

Elizabeth Treadwell Byington ‘Betty’ Borne died peacefully on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at home with her immediate family at her bedside. Elizabeth was born May 9, 1941 in Mexico City, Mexico and was a resident of Harahan for the past 55 years. Her father was a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. Department of State stationed in Mexico. Over the years, because of her father’s assignments, she lived in Tokyo, Japan and Lisbon, Portugal. She graduated high school from Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (CAISL) in 1959. Betty attended St. Mary’s Dominican College, where she advanced her knowledge of working with special needs children and adults. She worked with mentally and physically handicapped children and adults for over 50 years starting in 1959, when at age 18 she was employed by Magnolia School as a teacher of mentally handicapped children. As a result of her education and experience, she was elevated to the administrative staff as the Title XIX Coordinator overseeing the compliance of the facility to federal, state and local rules and regulations until her retirement in 2014. Betty continued to volunteer at Magnolia Community Services until 2021. During the formation of her husband in the Diaconate of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, she attended every class as well as participating in Clinical Pastoral Care alongside her husband. After his ordination, she assisted him in his ministry at River Oaks Hospital for several years. She also served as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion at St. Rita of Casica Catholic Church in Harahan and as a volunteer in various church ministries.

Betty is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Gary Joseph Borne, Sr.; a daughter, Elizabeth Borne Jaramillo and her husband Jose A. Jaramillo; a son, Gary J. Borne, Jr. and wife Sandra Galindo Borne; grandchildren, Julian Jaramillo, Bella Jaramillo, Noah Borne, Hayden Borne, Branden York, Rene Pequeno and Marcus Pequeno; a brother, James G. Byington, Jr. (Lynn) and a sister, Jeanette Apostol (Nicholas). She is predeceased by her parents, Barbara Booth Treadwell Byington and James Gregory Byington, Sr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rita of Casica Catholic Church, 7100 Jefferson Hwy., Harahan, LA on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 12:00 p.m., The Reverend Steven Bruno, celebrant. Visitation from 10:15 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary at 10:15 a.m. Interment in Saint Joseph Abbey Cemetery, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA 70457.
